The Still Small Voice Egg Shakers - Primary Singing (1)

The Still Small Voice Egg Shakers

Start by singing The Still Small Voice (archives) at the beginning of singing time. If the lyrics are still a little unfamiliar to your primary children, be sure to grab our helpful flip chart for this song.

Then, quickly grab everyone’s attention by bringing an egg shaker near your ear and shaking it while singing, “Listen, listen.” Continue the phrase by singing, “the Holy Ghost will” while doing a steady, quiet shake with your egg shaker. When you sing the word, “whisper,” give your egg shaker a louder shake.

Can you try it with me? Pass out the egg shakers and try this phrase together. Although this phrase comes at the end of the song, it’s a great line to start with because it uses most of the rhythms used in this pattern. Plus, it’s just a super fun section!

Then, go back to the beginning of the song and demonstrate the egg shaker pattern for each line using the printable pattern. For the most part, shorter words will get a quiet shake. Words like “Voice,” “Speaks,” and “Whisper” will get a louder, stronger shake.

When you sing the words, “guide” and “direct,” you’ll move your egg shaker in a squiggle, creating an imaginary path. For words like “save” and “protect,” quickly cover your egg shaker with your hands, as if hiding your egg.

As you demonstrate the pattern, have the kids try it with you one page at a time. When you are ready to try the entire song, add in the music. Continue reviewing this song as you practice this fun pattern!

In this outline below, I’ve used the slash mark to indicate the quiet shake.

“Through / a / still / small / voice (long shake), the / spirit / speaks (long shake) to / me to / guide (squiggle) me, / to / save (cover egg) me, / from / the / evil / I / may / see (sweep across).

“If I try / to / do / what’s / right (long shake), he will lead / me / through / the / night (long shake), direct me (squiggle), protect me (cover egg), and / give / my / soul / his / light (sweep across).

Listen (shake near ear), listen (shake near ear). The / Holy / Ghost / will / whisper (long shake). Listen (shake near ear), listen (shake near ear) to / the / still / small / voice (long shake).”

Extension Activities:

  • Divide the class into 6 small groups, one for each type of action/rhythm in the pattern. Have each group do only their assigned rhythm and sing out the words when they do their action.
  • Use the egg shaker pattern for the “Listen, listen” part of the song, but come up with your own pattern for the rest of the song! Maybe you simply use short shakes for short notes and long, loud shakes for long notes. What other rhythms can the kids come up with?
  • Split into 3 groups. Have each group learn one page of the egg shaker pattern. Then, have them perform or teach their pattern to the class!
