We once shared how to turn any chocolate into a milkshake, and let's just say, milkshakes and ice cream never fail us. They are delicious, easy to make, and well, perfect for customizations. This McFlurry has a bit different texture than the regular milkshake as it includes whipped topping to create a softer texture more like traditional soft serve.

Can I Use Different Cookies or Candy?

Yes! McDonald's typically offers OREO, Reese's, and M&M's options and occasionally they will put a seasonal flavor option on the menu. That doesn't mean those are the only types of McFlurries you can make. Add any flavor to yours that you like. The real secret here is that you add the Cool Whip into this for an added silky texture.

Below are some great ideas that go well in a homemade McFlurry.

  • Cookies: OREO, Nutter Butter, Mother's Frosted Circus Cookies, Biscoff, Chocolate Chip.
  • Candies: M&M's, Reese's Pieces, Heath, Snickers, Butterfinger, Hershey's Kisses, Hershey's Cookies, and Cream, Milky Way, Milk Duds, Carmelo, Rolo's, Twix, or Kit Kat.
  • Fruits: Strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, peaches, pineapple, or mango.
  • Chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, butterscotch chips, mint chips, or cinnamon chips.

Of course, on top of your McFlurry, you can add Cool Whip, whipped cream, and a cherry on top. Another great addition is to drizzle hot fudge or caramel syrup over the top or into the mug before you put the ice cream into it to serve.

Can I Use a Different Flavor Ice Cream?

You sure can! Just make sure whatever ice cream flavor you use, you will want to add the Cool Whip to the mixture to give it that creamier texture of soft-serve ice cream that you usually have in a McDonald's McFlurry.

Can I Make This With Frozen Yogurt Instead?

You can use frozen yogurt if you prefer, but it may change the texture. Part of the creaminess of the McFlurry is in that fatty ice cream. While I have made similar mixtures with frozen yogurt, it is a bit less creamy when finished.

Additionally, while you can make a lower carb or sugar-free version using things like Enlightened or Halo Top ice creams, it is not advised. Both of these brands of ice cream include a significant amount of air already in the ice cream. So, it is likely that they will deflate and not give you the creamy thick texture but a thinner option that isn't as delicious or appealing.

What's the Best Blender for Making a McFlurry?

You can make this with just about any household blender. However, I am a fan of two particular brands better than others. The Kitchenaid blender is a great higher quality option if it is within your budget.

For quality but affordable options, Ninja has a few options in the blender arena that are great. I have personally used a Ninja blender for 7 years now on a daily basis for smoothies with no issues and it is still going strong.

Another popular option is the Vitamix blender, but I do not have any personal experience with this brand. For the lowest end of the spectrum, you can usually grab a Hamilton Beach blender that will work fairly well. They do tend to struggle with thicker foods, so may be harder to get the right consistency for this dessert.

Can You Make McFlurries Ahead of Time?

Yes and no. You CAN make them ahead of time and freeze them in their containers for a few hours, I do not recommend making these more than a few hours before serving. If you do prepare in advance, you will want to let them sit at room temperature 10 to 15 minutes to soften some before serving.

Do You Eat McFlurries with a Straw or Spoon?

These are a much thicker ice cream treat than a traditional milkshake. So, a spoon is typically what you are served with at McDonald's. However, if you want to let yours melt a bit and drink it with a straw, go ahead and do that! It doesn't matter how you eat it as long as you enjoy the flavor!

Ingredients

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Cool Whip
  • Half and Half
