1982 Cape Dory 28 This 1982 28' highly sought after Cape Dory sloop is located in NJ.The Cape Dory 28 offers her owner more practical cruising features combined in one design than other yachts of her size ... features such as a self-tending club footed jib for effortless windward sailing ... a bowsprit that incorporates an anchor roller ... and a large 2 cyl. 13 hp Volvo Diesel that adds safety and dependability. These features, when combined with the famous Alberg full keel and moderate, well-distributed sail plan result in a yacht that is easily handled by a minimum of crew. Her hefty displacement of 9,000 pounds, and her long keel with attached rudder allow the Cape Dory 28 to hold her course in a seaway. These features mean comfortable motion, stiffness, and security to all aboard. Other standard equipment such as bronze opening ports, lightning ground system, bronze seaco*cks on all thru-hull fittings and solid bronze hardware, reflect the determination of Cape Dory to supply a cruising boat of the highest standards.She has 2 sets of sails, one that is 2 years old, the other set are the original sails.Many improvements made in the past few years:2010 – Replaced both the mainsail and jib. The boat was built in 1976 and we purchased it in 1995. The boat is one of the early Cape Dorys, the entrance to the companionway is deeper than the bridge deck later models. We have sailed the boat out of Lewes, Delaware and she normally is at a mooring in a protected harbor and has always been hauled in late fall. The boat is currently in the water in Lewes, Delaware and is available for inspection and sea trials with prior arrangement.The boat originally came with plastic ports, but we replaced all ports with bronze opening ports made by Newfound Metals. The main salon is equipped with a drop-leaf table and a pilot berth on the port side; below that is a pullout berth. There is a full berth on the starboard side and a Vee berth in the bow. The cushion covers are in poor condition but serviceable. There is a custom shelf for charts, and other accessories affixed to the stbd bulkhead. The good and the bad about the boat:The Bad: While the hull and decks are in wonderful condition, the co*ckpit sole should be replaced. Since the co*ckpit sole is isolated from the rest of the vessel we have never been concerned about moisture spreading to other parts of the boat. The teak rub rail and toe rail need work including bungs. The 12 volt electrical system is completely serviceable, but after years of making improvements and adding circuits, the system could benefit from some revamping and a consolidated circuit breaker panel.The Good:Garhauer solid van installed.CQR anchor.Harken Jib and Genoa roller furlingStanding rigging was replaced ten years ago.Running rigging replaced.Macerator pump and blackwater tank and valves installed.Solar trickle charger.Furuno radar installed on mast.Steaming and anchor lights replacedNew in-mast wiring and VHF antennaOf special mention is the engine and its associated parts:The original Volvo engine was replaced with a factory-new Beta Marine (Kubota) 3 cylinder diesel engine and transmission. They can spend $150,000 or more for a custom or semi-custom built boat from one of several manufacturers, or they spend a lot less for a good used boat from one of several production boat builders who used to build such models. The Cape Dory 28, offered by Cape Dory Yachts from 1975 to 1988, is the latter.This model was designed by Carl Alberg whose conservative design style seldom wavered regardless of size. I suspect he didn't like tinkering much with a proven formula. The Cape Dory 28 features a full-length keel with attached rudder, relatively low freeboard, a very handsome sheer and a well proportioned traditional trunk cabin. The bow and stern are nicely balanced and overhangs are a bit shorter, relative to the overall length, than Alberg's earlier designs. The overall length of this model is 28' 1-1/4".
